It is a \u003cb\u003esplash guard\u003c\/b\u003e. It breaks up water thrown at the opening by small waves, by your own wake and by whoever is kicking past you, and it keeps a fair amount of that out of the tube.\u003c\/p\u003e\n    \u003cp style=\"font-size:17px;margin:0 0 16px;\"\u003eIt is \u003cb\u003enot a sealing dry valve\u003c\/b\u003e. A dry top is a float that rises and shuts the tube when the snorkel goes under. This has no float and does not seal - you can see straight through the grille. The old title on this page claimed both a splash guard and a top dry valve; there is one mechanism here, and it is the first one.\u003c\/p\u003e\n    \u003cp style=\"font-size:17px;margin:0 0 22px;\"\u003ePractically, that means water gets in sometimes.
