You stack three pillows. They slide apart anyway.

Anyone who spends long stretches sitting up in bed knows the routine. You build a pile behind you, get settled, and within twenty minutes the top one has folded forward, the bottom one has crept out sideways, and you are propped on your elbow again rebuilding it one-handed.

Late pregnancy and the newborn months are when that gets old fastest, because that is when you are sitting up the most and moving the least. Feeding at three in the morning. Reading because you cannot get comfortable lying flat. Waiting out the part of the evening where lying down is simply not on.

This is one piece, and it stays where you put it

A single structured backrest instead of a stack. The back panel is quilted into vertical channels and shaped to sit against the curve of your lower back, with a row of rounded lobes across the top that your head and shoulders land on. It stands up on its own on a mattress. It does not fold, migrate or need rebuilding halfway through a feed.

How the backrest holds you upright: a contoured back panel, rolled arms on both sides, and a shape that sits on a bed, a sofa or the floor

The arms are the part people underestimate

Two thick rolled bolsters run forward from the sides at seat level. You put your elbows on them. That sounds minor until you are holding a baby, or a book, or a phone, for the fortieth minute — the weight of your own arms is most of what makes sitting up tiring, and here it is resting on something instead of on you.

They also close the sides in. Instead of perching on the front edge of a heap, you are sitting down inside something with a defined shape, which is why people end up staying in it far longer than they meant to.

The cover unzips and goes in the wash

A zip runs along the back seam, and the ribbed corduroy cover comes off the cushion in one piece. This matters more on this product than on most: it lives where spilled tea, milk and everything else that comes with a new baby lands. Take the cover off, wash the cover, leave the cushion alone. Check the care label sewn into your cover before you pick a temperature.

There is a pocket on the arm

A flat open pocket is stitched to the outside of one arm bolster. It takes a phone, a remote, or the reading glasses you otherwise put down on the duvet and then kneel on. Small thing. You will use it every single day.

Frequently asked questions

Will this help my back pain?

It is a cushion, not a treatment, and we are not going to tell you otherwise. What it does is give your back and arms something solid to rest against while you are sitting up, so you are not holding yourself in position. Plenty of people find sitting up is simply more comfortable that way. Back pain that persists, worsens, or comes with numbness or weakness is worth taking to a clinician rather than to a pillow — and that goes double in pregnancy.

Is it just for pregnancy?

No. It gets bought most often for late pregnancy and the feeding months because that is when sitting up for long stretches is unavoidable. The same shape works for reading, watching television, working from bed, gaming, or recovering from anything that keeps you propped up for a while.

Will it fit on my bed or sofa?

Set your expectations at the large end. The supplier gives two sizes: 29.5 x 24.4 x 17.7 in (75 x 62 x 45 cm) and 37.4 x 27.6 x 21.7 in (95 x 70 x 55 cm), width x height x depth. Even the smaller one is about two and a half feet across and comes up past two feet high — this is a full-size backrest you sit down inside, not a small lumbar cushion you tuck behind the small of your back. The bigger one is over three feet wide and will take up most of the width of a two-seater sofa. Measure your space before you order.

Medium or Large?

The two sizes the supplier makes are 29.5 x 24.4 x 17.7 in (75 x 62 x 45 cm) and 37.4 x 27.6 x 21.7 in (95 x 70 x 55 cm). We are still confirming with the supplier which of those two ships as our Medium and which as our Large, so we are not going to guess and risk sending you the wrong one. What we can tell you: the smaller is the one for a single bed, an armchair or a smaller frame, and the bigger is for a double bed, a full-size sofa, or if you are tall and want the back panel well up past your shoulders. If the exact size is what decides it, ask us before you order and we will confirm it for you first.

Does it come with the small pillow in the photos?

No. The backrest only. Some of the older supplier photography was styled with a separate small cushion sitting beside it, and that cushion is not part of the product — it is not offered as an option, it is not in the supplier’s own size chart, and it does not ship. One backrest pillow is what arrives.

How do I clean it?

Unzip the cover, take it off and wash the cover on its own. Keep the inner cushion out of the water — spot-clean it with a barely damp cloth and let it dry fully before you put the cover back on. Follow the care label on your own cover for temperature and drying.

Can I use it on the floor?

Yes. It holds its own shape, so it works against a wall, a sofa front or a headboard just as well as on a mattress. The ribbed corduroy grips better than a smooth fabric would, which helps it stay put on a made bed.
