A block of foam that refuses to go under

Two thick foam cylinders on a short plastic handle. Out of the pool it weighs almost nothing. In the pool it pushes back hard, because the water will not let it sink and will not let it move quickly.

That is the entire mechanism, and it is a good one: the harder and faster you move, the more it resists. Slow down and it eases off. You set the effort with your own speed rather than by picking a heavier one off a rack.

The listing sells a single dumbbell in the color you choose. One handle, two foam ends, one item in the box.

Most people using these want one in each hand, which means adding two to the cart. We would rather say that here, plainly, than have you open a parcel expecting a set.

Every photograph on this page shows one dumbbell for exactly that reason.

Where the effort comes from

Buoyancy and drag, not weight

Two things happen when you put a foam dumbbell in water. It wants to rise, so pushing it down takes effort. And it is a wide, blunt shape, so sweeping it sideways drags against the water.

Both of those scale with how fast you move and how deep you push. That is why there is no weight rating on this page, and why there cannot be one: the same dumbbell is easy at a gentle pace and genuinely hard at speed. Any number printed next to a buoyancy trainer is a number somebody invented.

It also means this is not a substitute for a dumbbell on dry land. Lift it out of the water and there is nothing there.

Being straight with you

What we do and do not say about it

Exercising in water is low impact because the water carries much of your body weight, so your knees, hips and ankles take less load than they would on a gym floor. That is a property of being in a pool, not something this dumbbell does.

What the dumbbell adds is resistance for the upper body while you are in there. You will feel the work in whatever you are using to move it, mostly the arms and shoulders.

We are not going to tell you it treats anything. If you are recovering from an injury or an operation, aquatic exercise may well be part of your plan, but the plan should come from your physiotherapist or your doctor, and the movements and the pace should be theirs rather than ours. Take the dumbbell to the session and ask.

The foam and the handle

Soft to hold, and it stays on the surface

The supplier specifies EVA foam, the same closed-cell foam used for pool noodles and kickboards. It floats, and unlike an open sponge it does not draw water up into itself, which is why the dumbbell still feels the same at the end of a session as it did at the start.

The grip is a short molded plastic bar set between the two foam ends, with just enough room for a hand to close around it. There is no strap and no padding on the bar, so it is held rather than fastened on.

Rinse it in fresh water after a chlorinated pool, shake it off and let it dry in the shade. It stores flat in a gym bag.
